Put Your Game-face On!

How long could you make it at your house without a mirror?

Maybe we could get away with a couple hours around here, at most.  Keep in mind, I have teenage girls…that estimate might be optimistic.

Why do you look in the mirror?

Maybe because you don’t want to walk around with spinach in your teeth or smeared lipstick.  You want to know if you need to change something.

If you looked in the mirror and saw dried ketchup on your chin from lunch, would you go back to work without wiping it clean?  Probably not.

The purpose of our mirror is to help us know what to improve or make better.  Not many of us would walk out of our houses in the morning without at least a glance in the mirror.

James 1:23 compares reading God’s Word with looking in the mirror.  It says,

“For if you listen to the Word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.  You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.”

If we wanted to do an experiment, we could walk around after lunch with our ketchup smeared chin – walk into meetings and go to our kids’ basketball game. I can’t speak for you, but I wouldn’t stop thinking about the ketchup. Maybe if I left it there long enough, I’d forget about it.  But why in the world would I want to walk around like that? Seems ridiculous, doesn’t it?

But that’s what we often do, myself included.  We walk around without “glancing in the mirror or without wiping off the ketchup smear.”  We leave our house without putting our “game-face on.”  The Urban Dictionary defines “putting your game-face on” as: “a confident swagger you bring out when you are about to get ready to tackle something difficult, or when you are about to take on a challenge. Or when you are getting ready to get down to hard business.”

Life is full of daily challenges and difficulties.

We need our game-face on.  And the Bible is our play book.

If we are in God’s Word, we can walk confidently into our day.  We are often reminded through His words of the truths He knows we need to know.  Maybe we need the message not to worry, that He clears the path before you.  Or maybe we need a little encouragement to shine our light at work or a reminder to be patient when we drop our kids off in the morning.

This amazing Book saved my marriage and changed my life, so be ready for some supernaturally wonderful things to happen when you allow the Holy Spirit in and dig into His Word.  When I’m daily digging into the Word, I will often laugh out loud at how plainly God will speak to me through that crazy awesome Book.  It holds power we can’t even fathom, and yet how often don’t we toss it aside and aren’t even sure where we left it?!  I know I’m guilty of this.

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that “the Word of God is alive and active.”  That Book that doesn’t always take priority in our lives is alive!

And 2 Timothy 3:16 says “all Scripture is God-breathed.”  With the same breath that God breathed life into dust to form man, He used to bring life to His Word.  And as you read and soak in His words, He will use them to breathe life into you.

Ok, the next part really gets me worked up because I’ve seen it happen before my eyes.

If you have anything in your life you feel powerless to change, I have some hopeful and exciting news for you.

Insert drum roll…

The second part of Hebrews 4:12 says that His Word is “active.”  The Greek word is “energes,” which is where we get the word for “energetic” and also means “effective,” and “full of power to achieve results.”  Just let that bring your tired heart hope!

This Book you are opening is full of power to achieve results!”  It isn’t just to be read.  It will change you if you let it, I can guarantee it.  As it changes your heart, you can trust it will change your life.

So, where to start?

I can’t wait to see what God does when you are in the Word daily!  Just make the commitment to be in the Word every day for at least 30 days.  I will lay out a plan every day on the blog with tools and printables to get you going.  Get others to take this 30 day challenge too!  Talk about how God is using His Word to speak to you and change your heart.

I GUARANTEE you will be changed.  This book is FULL of power to achieve results and you can expect it, plan on it, and get ready to see it.

Tomorrow I will highlight some ways to prepare for this challenge.

He’s about to do some great things.

Yay! I am up for thirty days. You are exactly right. I was just having an old struggle of mine. I heard a story of particular cruelty and it tempted me to question God, or my faith in him, about this suffering. I said “I trust you God no matter what; but will You please help my understanding? ” So in my studying obedience in the Bible today I read “You who believe Jesus Christ have overcome the world . . . . God will not forsake you and will protect you. For He knows you live in a world that is under control of the evil one. . . . But be not afraid; as I have overcome the world so you shall overcome the world.” I found that very reassuring. It made me realize that overcoming THIS world may mean you have to pass through the fire of THIS world before we are welcomed to the next world. Still reading, still listening to God.

Yes, been there! And you better believe the enemy knows just how you are the most vulnerable and where to attack you! But you took your double-edged sword, the Word, and gave it right back to him. There are so many times I have to remind myself that I may not know in this life on earth the answer to those things I don’t understand and recognize His thoughts are higher than mine. The song “Where I Belong” by Building 429 is so great and speaks to this. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he32vwlKQPY and here are some of the first lyrics:

Sometimes it feels like I’m watching from the outside
Sometimes it feels like I’m breathing but am I alive
I will keep searching for answers that aren’t here to find

All I know is I’m not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong

Sending love your way!
